En Garde!

POSTED IN: NEWS

On the 11th of December, Cadets of 148 (Barnsley) Squadron tried their hand at fencing. It was for many including myself the first time they had tried the sport, but we adapted quickly thanks to the skilled and helpful instructors.

After introducing themselves, the instructors began by showing us the three types of fencing sword: the foil, the `ep`ee, and the sabre.

After warming up, we learned the commands and their positions such as: ‘en garde’ and ‘allez’ before moving on to attacking moves like thrusts and lunges for example. At the end pf the evening we used these moves when we had 1 on 1 bouts. For these we also used all the appropriate etiquette against each other in a competition style, which we had learned. Everyone was surprised to learn that they had picked up some new skills and had a great time doing it.

Overall, it was a very enjoyable experience as fencing is not something we get the opportunity to do every day. We are all looking forward to our next session!

Thanks the instructors that gave up their time to come and train us!

Hi James,

Thank you for today.  The families at the Sport 4 life all inclusive sports day really enjoyed the sessions you ran.  I was extremely impressed by your organisation, patience and ability to adapt your session to be abilities of the children.  We will definitely be inviting you to our next sport for life event.  We would welcome any constructive criticism to  improve our sports day for next year.

It was very fun because we worked as a team and i liked there being two battling sides in the games" DH Year 6 Pupil
James and Emma from fencing 4 All provided a fabulous afternoon of Battle Clan Fencing for year 6 children. The class were split into two teams – The Pirates and The Royal Navy. Each team had to hide, protect and defend their treasure through fencing one another. There was also the opportunity to practise archery skills within the game. The children enjoyed working as a team and discussing the best tactics to lead their team to victory. It was a great afternoon! A huge thank you must go to James and Emma for organising this super event for us.

I Would like to say a huge thank you to James and Emma for organising a wonderful afternoon of Clan Battle. The children were completely engaged and enthused by the idea of an opposing "clan" game and had such much fun whilst developing their fencing and archery skills. The game led to a fantastic amount of discussion about the tactics needed and the best methods of attack. During play, it was great to see all children so motivated and such active participation from all of them. I would thoroughly recommend this session!
